MRMC First in Nation to Use New Technique in Robotics Surgery
4/11/2018
Moberly, MO – March 15, 2018 – It isn’t often that a rural Missouri hospital can say it is the first to perform any kind of procedure, but recently Dr. Craig McCoy, Urogynecologist, made that claim a reality at Moberly Regional Medical Center. MRMC is the first hospital in the nation to perform a robotically-assisted hysterectomy using a new surgical instrument called theprecise flexible hand piece. This unique device utilizes helium plasma to create a more precise surgical incision with less tissue injury. Dr. McCoy has been using the laparoscopic version for the past five years and is now pleased that he can bring the same benefits to his robotic patients.
“This is just one more example of the kind of technology we are offering in the surgical department at MRMC,” explained Dr. McCoy. “I give huge credit to our OR staff for training on this exciting new equipment. With it, I’m able to access areas in the body that otherwise couldn’t be reached in the laparoscopic version providing a level of precision not available anywhere else right now.”
The device has a flexible shaft that can be controlled with graspers, forceps or grasping instruments. When Dr. McCoy uses it during robotically-assisted procedures, he can control it entirely from his operative console. He only needs one instrument to cut, coagulate and ablate tissue. All of these aspects may benefit patients due to a less invasive approach than has been historically used in hysterectomies.
MRMC congratulates Dr. McCoy and the MRMC OR Team for this groundbreaking achievement.
